The GN Group sets science-based emission reduction targets for 2030 in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement, committing to reduce CO2 emissions from its operations by 80% and from its value chain by 25%. These targets have just been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
GN’s 2030 targets are to reduce its own operational emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 80%, and its value chain emissions (scope 3) by 25% from a 2021 baseline.
For the past several years, GN has worked to reduce its climate impact. The significant reduction targets will be achieved through three main initiatives that are already well underway:
“Our science-based targets for 2030 set a clear path for decarbonizing our business and supply chain, which we believe is an inescapable prerequisite to continue creating real long-term value to our business, our stakeholders, and society as a whole” says Peter la Cour Gormsen, Group CFO of GN Store Nord.
Beyond setting science-based targets for emissions reductions by 2030, GN is also committed to setting a science-based net-zero target for 2050, at the latest. 2050 has been set by climate experts as the clear prerequisite to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.
GN’s science-based targets come on top of the ambitious and concrete sustainability goals that GN has previously set for 2025 in the areas of climate, products and packaging, and health. Whereas our communicated climate goal to be carbon neutral in 2025 (scope 1 and 2) allows for high quality carbon removal to offset emissions, our new science-based targets for 2030 must be met through absolute reductions and without mitigation beyond the value chain.
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)
SBTi supports companies in setting emission reduction targets necessary to keep the temperature rise below 2°C compared to pre-industrial temperatures. SBTi is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The overall goal of the initiative is for businesses and corporations worldwide to use science-based goals as a fundamental component of their approach to sustainability.
